From January 17th to 23rd, cases of Covid-19 increased by 5% compared to the previous week, and more than 21 million new cases were reported, the World Health Organization announced on Tuesday, Covid-19 Weekly. Mentioned in Epidemiological Update.

“Over 21 million new cases have been reported across the six WHO regions, which represents the highest number of weekly cases recorded since the start of the pandemic,” the update said.

According to WHO, the increase in cases was slower than last week, with only half of the six WHO regions reporting an increase in new cases, but five of the six reported one week ago.

The largest increase was in the Eastern Mediterranean region at 39%, followed by Southeast Asia at 36% and Europe at 13%. Similar numbers of cases were reported in the Western Pacific region as in the previous week. Decreases were reported 31% in Africa and 10% in the Americas.

The United States has the highest number of new cases, followed by France, India, Italy and Brazil.

As of January 23, there are more than 346 million confirmed Covid-19 cases worldwide.

The reported death toll was about 50,000, similar to the previous week.

Three WHO regions reported an increase in deaths: Southeast Asia (44%), Eastern Mediterranean (15%), and the Americas (7%). In the remaining three regions, new weekly declines in deaths have been reported.

The United States also has the highest number of new deaths, followed by the Russian Federation, India, Italy and the United Kingdom.

As of January 23, more than 5.5 million deaths have been reported worldwide.
