Is there BA.2, an Omicron subvariant from Texas?
Austin (KXAN) —Similar to Austin’s COVID-19 Case Count-Travis County Finally Seems to have reached its peak, Local and national health leaders point out another potential threat: BA.2, an omicron subvariant called the “stealth variant.”
Austin Public Health confirmed by KXAN has at least three cases of subvariants identified by the Houston Methodist Hospital. The Texas Department of Health said it could take a week or more for a sample to return positive and be sequenced before being reported to the dashboard. Currently, the dashboard does not show subvariants.
BA.2 has also been detected in states adjacent to Texas, such as New Mexico and nearby Colorado.
So what is a BA.2 subvariant? Do you need to worry? We asked health leaders in Austin-Travis County some of those questions.
If I get Omicron, can I get BA.2.
According to Austin Public Health, early reports indicate that the use of BA.1 (traditional Omicron strain) is likely to protect against BA.2.
Like all versions of this virus, it can be re-infected. Health leaders need to be up-to-date on vaccination to maintain the best protection against COVID-19 infection.
How does this compare to Omicron?
According to Dr. Desmar Walkes, health authority in Austin-Travis County, BA.2 has more than 80 mutations, but still has similar characteristics to Omicron.
“BA.2 is a sublineage of the Omicron variant, which means it works the same because it’s a sister of BA.1 and BA.3,” wrote APH spokesman William Malm. He added that although BA.2 may be more susceptible to infection than Omicron, according to early reports, the severity of the disease and the effectiveness of the vaccine are similar.
Why is BA.2 getting so much attention?
According to APH, this subvariant is listed as the variant currently under investigation. They added that the emergence of variants always requires the utmost care of scientists.
Earlier this week, variants are always at risk of causing problems, as long as there are pockets in the unprotected population, Walks said.
“We are at risk, and we are at risk of facing hospital capacity and financial challenges,” Walks said. “It is really important for us to continue to vaccinate the community and continue our mitigation efforts.”
Is it normal for subvariants to appear and spread so quickly?
This isn’t the first subvariant we’ve seen during this pandemic, but it’s getting a lot of attention. A spokesman for Austin Public Health said the virus will continue to evolve as long as people are susceptible to infection. The spokesman reiterated the importance of vaccination and support.
71% of the eligible population in Travis County is fully vaccinated. This does not include unqualified children under the age of five.
