Michigan surpasses 2M coronavirus cases since pandemic began
In its latest update, Michigan reported more than 2 million total coronavirus cases since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.
As of Friday, Feb. 4, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services reported 2,009,221 cases. That equals about a quarter of Michigan’s population of close to 10 million people.
The state also this week surpassed 30,000 total deaths. As of Friday, 30,379 people have died in Michigan of COVID-19.
When considering cases per million people, those 30 to 39 have been most affected. The next most affected age group, per-capita, are people 20 to 29, according to state health department data.
There have been more cases in females than males. Though, US Census data shows about 51% of the population is female.
The number of cases increased significantly with the rise of the highly contagious omicron variant, which swept rapidly through the state and now has been identified in all but about a dozen counties.
In November, the state reported about 143,000 cases. In December, when the variant was first confirmed in Michigan, there were about 209,000 cases and in January, as the strain became predominant, there were about 369,000 cases, according data sorted by the date of symptoms onset. (This differs from the new, reported case total because positive cases are not usually reported until a few days or more after symptoms appear.)

The milestone comes as case numbers are on a decline in Michigan. The seven-day average of new, reported cases dropped dramatically this week to 7,122 on Friday, Feb. 4. This is the lowest the average has been since Dec. 27.

Hospitalizations also are significantly down. As of Friday, 2,882 adults and 70 pediatric patients were hospitalized statewide with confirmed or suspected cases.
On Jan. 10, when the state hit record highs, there were 4,901 adult and 108 pediatric patients in hospitals with confirmed or suspected cases.
