Austin health officials worried more COVID-19 cases in protest

Austin Public Health officials updated the media at the weekly COVID-19 Q&A Virtual Meeting.

Austin, Texas — Austin Public Health (APH) Answered media questions at the weekly COVID-19 Q&A on June 3rd.

APH said it has responded to an increase of around 500 new cases over the past 8 days. APH said there was an increase in hospitalization over the same eight days. APH officials said they are working on an overall roadmap. This plans to address departmental concerns about health disparities and the disproportionate proportion of people in color in COVID-19 data.

Dr. Mark Escott, Austin’s Provisional Public Health Authority, said the city had a hospitalization rate of 16% and a mortality rate of 3.6%. The graph that Escott showed in a virtual Q&A shows that both rates increase with increasing age.

In particular, Escott said that residents of nursing homes had dramatically higher mortality rates than the general population. The mortality rate for residents of nursing homes was 22.5%, and the hospitalization rate was 30.8%.

According to Escott, the general population, excluding residents of nursing homes, had a death rate of 1.72% and a hospitalization rate of 14.6%.

Escott also referred to a statistic provided by researchers at the University of Texas called the “detection rate,” or the percentage of total COVID-19 cases detected. According to Escott, UT researchers estimate that there are seven to eight times more cases than indicated in the data. Assuming that this number is accurate and there are 7 to 8 times more cases than detected in the data, Escott takes into account the “not detected” cases, so the mortality rate is close to 1.72%. He said it would drop to 0.2%.

  • Texas: With more than 66,000 cases reported in the state and more than 1,600 people killed in Texas, According to the Texas Department of Health.. The ministry estimates that more than 44,000 people have recovered from the virus.
  • Central Texas County:
    • Travis County: More than 3,400 cases have been reported with at least 93 deaths. At least 1,296 people recovered from the virus.
    • Williamson County: Over 600 cases have been reported with at least 25 deaths. About 399 people recovered from the virus.
    • Hayes County: At least 370 cases have been reported in the county, resulting in at least five deaths. More than 200 people have recovered from the virus.

Media Q&A:

Question: Do you anticipate a spike in incidents due to all protests?

Answer: We expect an increase in the number of cases. It results in illness transmitted by person-to-person interactions. I’m glad that the people participating in the peaceful protest were wearing masks. It should help mitigate that risk, but in many of those places it was impossible to get social distance. So we are worried about the rise in cases. It’s important to monitor it. We encourage individuals who may have participated in the protest. Visit our website and get a rating.. I would like to actively work in this field.

Question: Tell us more about your plans for the June 13 release. What does it entail, funding, and timeline of its implementation?

Answer: We have put together a plan. Citi is committed to partnerships with community members and would love to hear from them. Therefore, we will share some of the information we have gathered about testing in areas and regions where we know that COVID-19 has a high number of cases, and in areas with high health disparities. In addition, we are looking at ways to provide additional support to the community. We want cities to be able to partner and identify them by the target zip code they are our ambassador for.

More Coronaville Coverage:

Question: Yesterday, Dr. Escott said the city should not postpone addressing existing conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and hypertension that are exacerbating COVID-19-positive tests. How does the city plan to affect these conditions in the short term?

Answer: A few years ago, the ministry established the Health Equity Community Engagement Department. The department has quality of life staff. These team members have relationships with the Latinx community, the Asian community, and the African American community. Over the years, they have established a place for us to go and offer screenings. Also, connect your potentially uninsured person to your doctor.

Question: APH plans to launch mobile COVID-19 tests in black and brown communities to increase communication. How will the city utilize the CommUnityCare Center to achieve its goals?

Answer: The division has been working with CommUnityCare for several years. We currently have a regional agreement with CommUnityCare and will continue to offer testing at multiple locations and some clinics. The city will work with them to create collaborative maps and create processes that can ensure that there are no gaps. We are very confident in that partnership.

Question: Does the Austin Public Health Service provide tests to officers responding to protests?

Answer: There is a test site for first responders only. Tests are available. No cases related to protests have been seen yet. Indeed, if you see clusters around the protest, make further recommendations. This can encourage the first responder to take a test if they participate in the response to the protest. But for now, the test is available and keeps track of the first responder very closely.

Question: It’s been a week and a half since the bar was reopened Do you expect a similar rise in cases and hospitalizations related to that policy change?

Answer: The situation in a bar is unique because it is difficult to maintain a social distance in a bar. The governor’s concepts and recommendations were valid, but the fact remains that the bar cannot keep people on the table. They will not be able to keep people apart. People will be crowded in the bar. They are unable to talk face-to-face and maintain social distance. My guess is that the bar is, and will continue to be, a high risk of exposure.
