Government to fund more flu vaccines this winter amid Omicron threat

A quarter of a million more people will be able to get the flu vaccine for free this winter, Health Minister Andrew Little has announced.

Little confirmed on Tuesday the Government would fund an additional 250,000 vaccines to protect the country’s most vulnerable communities and the health system.

“Up to two million New Zealanders will be eligible for a free flu vaccination in 2022,” he said.

Flu vaccines are free for pregnant women, over 65s and people with medical conditions such as cancer and diabetes.

Little said the initiative would see the age of eligibility reduced, and more young people would also have access to the free vaccine.

There were no further details about who would be eligible on Tuesday. A spokeswoman said health officials would provide an update soon.

Little said funding more flu vaccinations would “prevent our hospitals from becoming overwhelmed” amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

“Vaccinating more people from the flu will save lives, preserve capacity in our hospitals, and is a part of our plan to get through the Covid-19 pandemic. ””

Both the flu vaccine and the Covid-19 vaccine can be safely administered at the same time – regardless on whether a person receives a booster shot or a paediatric vaccine.

The only vaccine that requires a gap is the Zostavax shingles vaccine. People are advised to wait one week between receiving that vaccine and the Covid-19 vaccine.
