Glucose monitoring device currently covered for diabetic Alberta children
Continuous blood glucose monitoring for children under the age of 18 in Alberta is currently covered by the government’s health benefit scheme.
The monitor is a wearable device that tracks blood glucose levels in real time, eliminating the need for diabetics to perform the process of finger sticking several times a day.
Expanded coverage, which came into effect on February 1, will help more than 1,500 diabetic children in Alberta, the state said in a news release. Parents will save $ 4,200 a year on the cost of surveillance systems, the state said.
“Having CGM has changed my life in giving me a safety net that it’s always with me,” 17-year-old Savannah Sabel told CBC. Edmonton AM on Wednesday.
The monitor uses a sensor inserted under the skin that constantly measures blood sugar levels. The information is sent to another device such as a mobile phone or insulin pump.
Sabel, who was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 5, has been wearing a monitoring device since the age of 13. She didn’t have to worry about her blood sugar while participating in various activities.
“There was always a risk of doing things with a high level of activity, or just sleeping at night and not being aware of them so that you could feel them,” she said.
Her monitor also automatically adjusts the amount of insulin she receives, eliminating the risk of blood sugar levels dropping to dangerous levels. This can cause fainting and, in some cases, seizures.
CMG devices are expensive and often cost between $ 3,000 and $ 5,000 per year.
Dr. Peter Senior, director of the Alberta Diabetes Institute at the University of Alberta, said the state subsidizing the cost of ongoing blood glucose monitoring will make them accessible to many without extensive health insurance. I said I would.
“It’s really a kind of competition for poor families with children with type 1 diabetes,” the senior told the CBC on Wednesday.
A competing technology for monitoring blood glucose is the flash glucose monitoring system. Unlike a continuous monitoring system, the flash system needs to be scanned to read the level. Some states, including Ontario, Cover flash devicesIt is cheaper than CMG and costs about $ 2,400 per year.
To be included in the Alberta program, parents must be part of a government-sponsored supplemental health benefit program. The cost depends on what kind of plan the individual has.
Low-income families have free access through Alberta’s Child Health Benefits, Alberta Adult Health Benefits, or Income Support and Guaranteed Income for the Severely Handicapped.
Everyone else pays a monthly premium. Its coverage, managed by Alberta Blue Cross, costs $ 118 for the family, or $ 82.60 if subsidized.
Ongoing blood glucose monitoring is Phase 2 of the state’s three-part plan to provide diabetic Albertans with better access to enhanced care and technology.
Phase 1, announced last August, targets diabetes test strips and consumables.
Alberta Health said the final phase will be announced within a few months.
The government expects to spend approximately $ 1 million on surveillance systems for the rest of the fiscal year ending March 31. Expenditure for the 2022-23 fiscal year is estimated at $ 6 million.
