The human olfactory mucosal cell model opens up new perspectives for Alzheimer’s disease-ScienceDaily
Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland have developed and characterized a new cellular model for Alzheimer’s disease. It is widely useful in research and may be useful for early diagnosis and testing of new therapies. In collaboration with clinicians at Quopio University Hospital, researchers collected nasal biopsies from cognitively healthy individuals and patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease over the years. Following tissue processing, researchers applied a powerful single-cell RNA sequencing approach to characterize patient-derived cells in the olfactory mucosa above the nasal cavity. The sensory mucosal tissue is important for the sense of smell through the olfactory receptor neurons that project to the brain.
“This unique approach reveals that cells in the nasal passages are damaged in patients with Alzheimer’s disease,” said early researcher Riikka Lampinen.
“Not only are transcriptional changes observed, but the function of these patient-derived cells is also impaired.”
The new cell model and its results cell today.
Alzheimer’s disease is a catastrophic chronic disease for which there is no cure or effective cure. Therefore, a new human-based approach is needed to understand and counter the pathophysiology of the disease. New results from Associate Professor Katja Kanninen’s research group may provide important insights into why the majority of Alzheimer’s disease patients suffer from olfactory dysfunction early in the etiology of the disease in the future. In addition, this new research model, which reflects human physiology, has broad utility in enabling detailed investigation of disease mechanisms that may lead to the discovery of new drugs.
The olfactory mucosa has been proposed as a point of entry for air pollutants and viruses into the brain.
“Our current work is focused on understanding in detail how viral infections and exposure to air pollutants affect the cells of the olfactory mucosa,” says Katja Kanninen.
These results have not yet been published, but are long-awaited in the hope that they will provide important insights into how drugs inhaled into the air access the brain and interfere with its function. I am.
