A bird flu outbreak in Indiana found a deadly virus on a second farm
Outbreaks of bird flu in Indiana are widespread. The virus was detected on the second turkey farm in Dubois County. Depending on the condition.. There are 26,000 birds on this farm.
According to the Indiana Animal Health Commission, this is currently considered a presumed positive case, and samples have been validated at the United States Department of Agriculture’s National Veterinary Institute in Iowa.
All turkeys are euthanized while the results are pending.
Dennis Deller Spears, a spokeswoman for the Animal Health Commission, said: “So the owners are taking action to prevent further spread.”
According to federal officials, this does not represent an imminent concern for public health, but people in agriculture and industry are concerned.
last week, USDA reported a confirmed case Analysis of H5N1 strain of bird flu on a farm in Dubois County. It is a highly pathogenic strain, which means it is deadly to all sick poultry. All turkeys (29,000) on the farm were euthanized to limit their spread.
This was the first confirmed case of influenza in the country since 2020, and six years after it was last discovered on a farm in Indiana, with hundreds of thousands of birds killed.
bird influenza: A virus was found in a poultry farm in Indiana, killing nearly 30,000 turkeys to contain the spread
As soon as the state received its first results on February 9, it issued quarantine on the site and on all farms within a 10km radius, primarily in parts of northern Dubois and Spencer counties. This includes 17 other operations, said Derrer Spears.
The second most affected farm is one of the farms in the controlled area that is already under quarantine. The proximity of that second farm to the first site means that the established control circles remain the same.
All farms in the controlled area should be inspected at least once a week to monitor the disease. According to Deller Spears, the first test last week returned to negative.
The second herd was tested again after farmers noticed a dramatic reduction in water consumption by birds. This is a clinical sign of bird flu.
The names of the affected farms have not been published.
Turkeys euthanized on the first farm are disposed of on-site by composting in a manner approved and supervised by state and federal agencies. At this time, it is unclear if the same method will be used on the second farm. The barn and all equipment also need to be thoroughly cleaned – “eat the floor clean,” said Derrer Spears.
Once cleaning is complete and disposal reaches a certain stage, quarantine will be lifted. There are many factors involved and there is no target date to do it, the state said it is likely to be about 4 to 6 weeks.
pollution: Indiana steelmakers have to pay $ 3 million for the spill of cyanide that killed thousands of fish.
The State Animal Health Commission has also set up an additional 10 kilometers of surveillance area beyond the boundaries of the controlled area, allowing additional surveillance of the virus in commercial poultry in that area. Operations in this zone are not isolated, but are tested less frequently, but regularly, until the control area is released.
It is unknown how the Dubois County herd was infected. According to Derrer Spears, the avian influenza virus is fairly common in wild migratory and waterfowl, and diseased ducks and geese spread in the dung as they pass by.
Indiana is not the only state suffering from the outbreak of the virus.
The poultry business in Kentucky and Virginia It was confirmed that the bird was infected Just days after the first Indiana herd was tested positive, there was growing concern that a highly deadly bird flu outbreak would spread across the country.
A recently identified infectious disease occurred in the commercial chicken business at Tyson Foods, Kentucky, which resulted in a herd of 240,000 birds and a mixed Virginia backyard. Authorities are also awaiting test results for turkey herds in another county in Kentucky.
The strain also caused havoc in Asia and Europe and was found in several wild birds along the east coast. Canada recently confirmed H5N1 avian influenza in commercial poultry surgery in Nova Scotia.
This current Midwestern outbreak indicates that it has followed the Mississippi and Ohio rivers and entered a bird migration path called the Mississippi Flyway, which includes several major poultry states such as Indiana. It is important.
The bird flu was last discovered in Indiana commercial poultry in January 2016. The situation also started with one herd and then tests showed that it spread to nearly 12 other herds. Ultimately, more than 400,000 birds needed to be euthanized throughout the state.
Dubois County is the top turkey producing county in Indiana. Indiana is also the third largest producer of turkey in the country, the largest producer of ducks and the second largest producer of edible eggs and laying hens.
Still, this outbreak is not only a concern for commercial farming.
Animal Health Commission staff continue to contact known hobbies in the control area or backyard poultry owners to schedule bird inspections. The state said that 25 such herds had been sampled so far, but laboratory testing was not completed.
The state requires hobby poultry owners in southern Dubois County to contact the Animal Health Commission (317-544-2387) to schedule tests for free.
Staff at USDA-Wildlife Services in Indiana have also begun monitoring wild birds in the area.
