A few days after clusters of recombinant delta and omicron variants of coronavirus were reported worldwide, leading virologists said there was no need to panic at this time.

“At this point, there is nothing to suggest that these recombinants have additional advantages over Omicron,” said Vinod Scaria, a scientist at the CSIR Institute for Genome Integrated Biology, on Tuesday. Said on Twitter.

Scaria said more epidemiological data are awaited as more genomes are reported from around the world.

He said recombination with SARS-COV-2 is less frequent than seen with influenza, but multiple recombination events have been reported in the Covid pandemic.

Previously named strains include Japan’s XA (UK and India), XB (US), and XC (Alpha + Delta), Scaria said.

On February 11, the United Kingdom listed Delta-Omicron recombinant variants of SARS-COV-2 under “Signals currently being monitored and investigated.”

Additional clusters of the Delta Omicron recombinant genome have been reported from Queensland, Australia, and seven more recombinants have been reported from the east coast of the United States.

Recombination occurs when two different mutant fragments of the virus infect the same host cell.
