Ascending Omicron BA.2 subvariant
(WXYZ) — New studies suggest that a subvariant of Omicron, BA.2, may cause more serious illness than the original Omicron BA.1. It also seems to be more resistant to some of the treatments used to combat infections.
Experiments in a Japanese laboratory have shown that BA.2 is significantly different from the original Omicron variant. BA.2 has dozens of genetic changes that researchers feel need to acquire Greek letters.
How did scientists discover that BA.2 can cause more serious illness than the original Omicron variant? Now, in laboratory studies, animals infected with BA.2 became more ill than animals infected with BA.1. BA.2 also caused worse lung function compared to BA.1. Examination of tissue samples revealed that animals with BA.2 were more injured than animals with BA.1.
Of concern, this study also found that the BA.2 strain could replicate faster than BA.1. I am good at sticking cells together. This is one of the reasons scientists believed it was so damaging to the lungs.
There is mixed evidence of actual work regarding BA.2 and how serious it is. For example, looking at the UK and South Africa, hospitalizations are declining. But in Denmark, hospitalizations and deaths are on the rise.
According to one study, BA.2 may be resistant to sotrovimab. This is a monoclonal antibody therapy given to people at high risk of developing severe illness. Blood tests suggest that BA.2 can bypass antibodies in people infected with alpha and delta variants. Studies have shown that BA.2 is 30-50% more contagious than the original Omicron variant.
Currently, BA.2 accounts for only about 4% of COVID-19 infections in the United States. Blood tests show people who have recently been infected with BA.1. The original Omicron has some protection against BA.2 infections, especially when vaccinated. Those who avoided the infection and took booster shots regained protection and reduced the chances of post-infection illness by about 74%.
