Pakistan Participates in Global Antiviral Research Initiative-Pakistan
Karachi: US, Brazilian, Pakistan, Senegalese, South African and Taiwanese institutions will work together under a grant aimed at developing an Antiviral Research Network (UWARN). This is an important global research initiative on infectious diseases and pandemics.
The National Institutes of Health Center for Emerging Infectious Diseases (CREID) awarded a $8.55 million grant over five years to the University of Washington (UW) and its partners, including the University of Aga Khan (AKU).
UWARN — one of the 10 centers of the CREID Network with an interdisciplinary team of researchers spread across 30 countries — with urgently needed diagnostic tools to identify potential pandemic viruses and act against a variety of pathogens. Several AKU faculty members are involved in the project. The principal investigator in Pakistan is Najeeha Talat Iqbal in the Department of Pediatrics and Pediatric Health and Biomedical Sciences.
Drs. Fara Karmer and Ali Faisal of Pediatrics and Children’s Health and Professor Elm Khan of Pathology and Experimental Medicine are collaborators on the project.

According to AKU experts, such large-scale global collaboration is increasingly needed to combat known and unknown diseases.

Just two years ago, in 2018, the World Health Organization identified a priority list of viruses for which no vaccine or drug was available. This included “Disease X”, a surrogate for an unknown pathogen that could cause a serious pandemic. Covid-19 is a type of threat that X disease is intended to represent.
“Pandemics are… becoming an increasingly frequent threat to public health in developing countries,” said Professor Asad Ali, Vice Dean of Research at AKU. “We need to understand more about emerging infections to prevent the emergence of new viruses from becoming a pandemic that threatens our lives.”
UWARN researchers advance innovative approaches to laboratory diagnostics, including identifying reagents for antibody tests that detect antibodies in the blood to diagnose active or previous infections I am aiming for that.
Another approach is to use a “engineered protein” that emits light in the presence of antibodies in the blood using technology developed by the UW Medicine Institute for Protein Design.
The group also works to better understand how the virus manipulates the human immune system, promotes the development of better blood biomarkers, and only drugs that can improve the outcome of patients with viral infections. Not predict the severity of the disease.
