According to one study, the SARS-CoV-2 virus can damage small blood vessels in the heart without infecting them, as seen in severe COVID-19 patients.

Studies published in the journal Clinical Science show that blocking antibodies may be a new treatment for reducing cardiovascular complications.

An interdisciplinary research team led by the University of Bristol in the United Kingdom analyzed how SARS-CoV-2 interacts with heart cells and causes the myocardial damage seen in patients with COVID-19.

Until now, it was unknown whether the heart cells were infected with the virus or damaged due to an excessive cytotoxic defense response.

This reaction, also known as a “cytokine storm,” arises from immune cells. This causes cytotoxic cells to attack and kill infected cells by releasing proteins called cytokines.

The team, led by Professor Paolo Madedu, exposed human pericardial cells, the cells that surround the small blood vessels of the heart, to the SARS-CoV-2 alpha and delta variants, along with the original Wuhan virus.

They found that the pericytes of the heart were not infected.

In a second test-tube experiment, researchers challenged cardiac pericytes with only spike proteins, which the virus uses to invade and infect cells, without the virus.

Peplomers made pericytes unable to interact with companion endothelial cells and induced them to secrete inflammatory cytokines. This suggests that peaplomers are harmful to human heart cells.

The team found that an antibody that blocks CD147, a receptor for peplomers, protects cardiac pericytes from damage.

Researchers have suggested that SARS-CoV-2 can damage vascular cells without infecting them.

They added that the cleaved peplomer particles could also amplify the damage caused by the binding of complete virions to vascular cells.

Researchers have confirmed the presence of SARS-CoV-2 peaplomer in blood samples obtained from patients with COVID-19.

They said this opens the possibility for pedromer particles that pass through the circulation to reach sites away from the respiratory system and cause systemic damage.

“Pericytes are essential cells of the heart, but their role in maintaining the structural integrity of the coronary vascular tree has only recently emerged,” said Elisa Avolio, the first author of the Bristol Medical College. ..

“Our ongoing studies of human pericytes of the heart show that these cells cooperate with coronary endothelial cells during healing from a heart attack,” Avolio said.

This study shows that peplomers endanger this interaction and convert pericytes into inflammatory cells.

Researchers pointed out that CD147 blocking antibodies may be a new treatment for reducing cardiovascular complications in patients with COVID-19.

“Microvascular complications are frequent and harmful in patients with COVID-19, and up to 11% of patients admitted to the intensive care unit have myocardial damage or heart attack,” Bristol Medical College said. Paolo Madeddu added.
