IU Health Hospital returned to normal after COVID Omicron surge
As the daily number of COVID-19 cases continues to decline, Indiana University Health Officials said on Tuesday that the situation was slowly returning to normal after the Omicron surge.
The IUH hospital is still full, but the census is more typical at this time than a month ago. And surgeons are trying to catch up with the unprocessed portion of non-urgent procedures that were delayed in the heyday of the surge.
As of Tuesday, with a height of more than 600 COVID-19 patients, 256 patients were hospitalized for the virus in the IU health system, said Dr. Christopher Weaver, Chief Clinical Officer.

Dr. Mark Reutkemeier, Chief Medical Officer of IU Health’s Adult Academic Health Center, said: “We haven’t grown until January. It wasn’t sustainable … We’re back in a more sustainable care model.”
The Adult Academic Health Center currently has 64 COVID-19 patients, a decrease of approximately 40% from its peak. As of Tuesday, Riley Children’s Hospital has 19 COVID patients, many of whom require intensive care, said Dr. Michele Saisana, Chief Quality and Safety Officer.
State-wide COVID-19 cases have plummeted in recent weeks. The average number of cases per day for the first 7 days of the month was 8,728.As of Monday, it had fallen to 1,121, State dashboard..
Changes in hospitalization across the state were equally dramatic, from 3,519 in mid-January to 1,107 on Monday.
Last week, the Indiana Department of Health announced that it would close the Indianapolis Motor Speedway vaccination and testing clinic this Saturday. The clinic, which opened in September, was originally scheduled for about a month. The ministry also announced that the deployment of Wehrmacht members to long-term care facilities and hospitals will end on March 14.

As another sign of a return to quasi-normal, IU Health officials said they are trying to catch up with all the steps delayed due to the surge in Delta and Omicron. According to Weaver, each hospital is “in a slightly different place” in dealing with the untreated portion of surgery.
According to Loitkemeier, it is expected that the backlog will be cleared within the next three to six months.
This is all good news, but Saysana said it may be premature to consider COVID-19 as an endemic along the flu. Endemic remains in the community at baseline. The second increase in cases can lead to outbreaks.
“To be honest, we don’t know how close we are to endemic,” she said. “We have just escaped a fairly significant surge.”
Endemic diseases like the flu did not cause the surge seen in Omicron, which led to a record number of hospitalizations, she added.
