Four children who received lazotide acetate orally four times daily also received steroids and intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG). They were compared to 22 children with MIS-C who received only steroids and IVIG.
Compared to children who did not take larazotide, children who took the drug recovered much faster from gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, and had a slightly shorter hospital stay.
Studies show that coronavirus-related spike proteins were removed from the blood of children treated with larazotide within 1 day, compared to 10 days in children who were not treated with the drug.
“These findings suggest that larazotide may provide a safe and beneficial adjuvant therapy for the treatment of MIS-C,” the study authors conclude.
Results were recently published online in the journal Critical care survey..
Lalazotide is currently in Phase 3 clinical trials to approve the treatment of celiac disease, an autoimmune disease that leads to damage to the small intestine.
