Pursuit of personal treatment by the president of the KC Sickle Cell Association
Kevin Wake never forgets when he and his mother went to a doctor’s appointment. And his mother asked the doctor what to start to get Kevin and his younger brother John to go to college. Doctors responded by telling the pair that most patients with sickle cell anemia have not lived for more than 25 years. She suggested they weren’t interested in college worries. Wake’s mother rejected the proposal. Wake is now 53 years old and is the president of the Uriel Owens Sickle Cell Association. He loves the intersection of his life and his career with sickle cell anemia. “We will provide resources to patients in the community through education and emergency financial support if patients are hospitalized and have problems paying invoices,” Wake said. Sickle cell anemia is a rare hereditary disease in which red blood cells cannot carry oxygen well and damage the place where blood circulates. Wake points out almost everywhere. His family, the second of three boys, is well aware of the possible sacrifices of rare illnesses. They discovered that his two-and-a-half-year-old son, David Wake, had sickle cell disease after his sudden death. “They found sickle cells at his autopsy,” Wake said. Later, tests confirmed that he also had it. His next brother, John Wake, was born shortly thereafter. He also had sickle cell anemia. Sadly, the tragedy of this illness struck the Wake family again. “John died in 2003 from a complication of sickle cell disease at the age of 32,” Wake said. Wake tells his parents that his work is not only a way to celebrate his personal passion and the life of his brother, but that the loss of his parents is driving progress in the fight against sickle cells.
