When COVID-19 Encounters Cancer-Monclalion

I was 18 when the pandemic started. In fact, it was March 13, 2020 that my high school finally decided to close. If you had told me that I had been diagnosed with cancer by October 23 of that same year, I wouldn’t believe it.

But I had to believe it. A year of my life has passed and there have been some advances, and now, in addition to all of that, I was looking down at the barrel of testicular cancer just two months before my 19th birthday.

The doctor didn’t say “you have cancer” at first. It left my mother almost a false sense of hope until her mother had to ask her to clarify the meaning of “tumor”. Finally, he said, “”All mothers, of course, shut down at that point. From that moment until the final surgery, I always had to be an adult in the room.

But when I found out that something was wrong with my body, it was the first thing I did to find out. If I could find that power and move forward and see a doctor the next day, I could have been one of those 400 men.

That awesome period of my life will be a roller coaster of sadness, sadness, anger, and turmoil. I already had cancer and was experiencing an indescribable dissonance with the fact that I hadn’t had the COVID-19 vaccine yet. Since there was no safety net, everyone I contacted was a safety concern, from diagnosis to bilateral orchiectomy.

I was very nervous. We detected the cancer early and it had spread to both sides, but not vertically. If everything goes according to schedule, it is possible to get out of the forest without chemotherapy and get rid of the cancer within a few weeks. Still, of course, nothing is watertight, so the exact news I was most afraid of came from my inner circle.

My mother thought she had a sinus infection, which was quite normal for her. But, just in case, she took the test because I was at home and often went to get reservations. Within two hours of the test, she received a call from the clinic telling her that she had been infected with COVID-19.

I was standing in the hallway opposite her when she hung up, like two cowboys facing each other at noon. I saw her tears run down her face, and I was rather frustrated and shouted at her. I’m still terrible about it because it wasn’t her fault and she didn’t ask for this more than anyone else.

When the dust settled down, I grabbed my stuff and prepared to live away from the car for the next two weeks, assuming I didn’t turn positive.

For some reason, I tested negatively. So did the rest of my family — dads, sisters, and maybe dogs, it was a miracle. Fortunately, I grew up with my family across the street, so they took me while my house remained in the hot zone.

COVID-19 robbed so many people a lot. Despite the cancer and the incredible moments that followed, all my family were alive and out on the other side. I had surgery, but the cancer did not spread, and my tumor markers were reduced to an undetectable margin after surgery. The cancer is gone.

I am fully aware of how lucky I am and even more aware of how unhappy others have been. With regard to cancer, we will live forever with sadness and guilt about what happened.

As for COVID-19, we’ve been in this mess for two years now. We have made a lot of progress, but most importantly, we now have a vaccine. If you leave a word for this work, you will be vaccinated. It’s not about personal choice or “freedom,” but about protecting others and becoming an ally of those whose immune system has failed them.

To protect the people around us, it is important to fulfill our obligations as a decent human being. This virus may not kill you, but your negligence can kill others.
