In Yongcho, colleagues at Sunggyunkan University School of Medicine in Seoul, South Korea conducted a cross-sectional study of 72,092 women under the age of 40 who underwent regular health examinations. A longitudinal analysis was performed on 51,118 women without NAFLD at baseline. We investigated the relationship between the length and irregularity of the menstrual cycle and the risk of NAFLD on the basis of a 26-30 day cycle.
Researchers found that 27.7 percent of participants had long or irregular menstrual cycles at baseline and 7.1 percent had general NAFLD. There was a positive association observed with long or irregular menstrual cycles with prevalence NAFLD. Incident NAFLD occurred in 8.9% of women during a median follow-up of 4.4 years. The multivariate adjusted hazard ratio for NAFLD was 1.22 when comparing long or irregular cycles with the reference group after adjusting for age, obesity index, insulin resistance, and other confounding variables. In the time-dependent analysis, the hazard ratio was 1.49, which strengthened the relevance.
