Stoddard County, Missouri (KFVS)-Federal authorities have identified bird flu in a commercial chicken herd in southeastern Missouri.
The United States Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Veterinary Services has confirmed the presence of highly pathogenic influenza known to be deadly to poultry.
According to a news release from the Missouri Department of Agriculture, samples were delivered to the University of Missouri’s Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Institute for testing after a surge in herd deaths.
The National Institute of Veterinary Services in Des Moines, Iowa has confirmed positive results.
The Missouri Department of Agriculture said veterinary authorities had quarantined the affected facility and that birds on the premises would not enter the food system.
“The Missouri Department of Agriculture is working closely with federal animal health authorities to contain and eliminate the disease,” Agriculture Director Chris Chin said in a statement. “Protecting the health and well-being of livestock and poultry is a top priority. Both commercial and backyard poultry producers are encouraged to enhance biosecurity protocols to prevent the spread of the virus. . “
According to the ministry, poultry producers should prevent birds from coming into contact with wild birds and report an increase in sick or abnormal mortality to the local veterinarian or state veterinary office 573-751-3377. ..
Employees of the MDA Animal Health Department are working with federal partners for additional monitoring and inspection in the area surrounding the affected herds.
