KDA warns of “sudden death” bird disease found near Kansas
Manhattan, Kansas (KSNT) —The Kansas Department of Agriculture (KDA) encourages poultry owners to take additional steps to protect their herds from bird flu.
It is from KDA’s Animal Health Department and is relevant for both commercial and backyard herds. Owners are advised to monitor birds for bird flu symptoms and implement biosecurity practices.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza Is a highly contagious viral disease that can infect turkeys, chicken and other birds, causing serious illness and sudden death. HPAI has been found in backyard herds and commercial activities in neighboring states, but has not yet been detected in Kansas.
“Protecting poultry in the state is a top priority and all poultry owners need to be part of efforts to prevent the spread of the disease in Kansas,” said Justin, Animal Health Commissioner. To best protect poultry using biosecurity techniques to prevent pollution, the KDA recommends:
- Prevent contact with wild birds, especially wild waterfowl
- Limit unauthorized people and vehicles
- Covers and surrounds the outdoor feeding area and covers the stored feed
- Clean and disinfect vehicle tires and equipment on other farms and other locations with poultry and wild birds
- Wear clean clothes, boots and shoes when coming into contact with the herd
- Isolate a new bird
Symptoms of HPAI include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and other signs of dyspnea. Reduced water consumption due to lack of energy and appetite.
