How to reduce the risk of colorectal cancer. | Tri-County Sunday

With the exception of skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. And in Pennsylvania, colorectal cancer mortality is higher than the national average. Fortunately, colorectal cancer is often prevented or detected early by regular screening and successfully treated. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, an opportunity for all Americans to talk to their doctors about colorectal screening options.

“Colorectal cancer occurs when abnormal growth forms in the colon or rectum,” said Taylor Grimm, a certified registered nurse in Penn Highland Gastroenterology. “Colorectal cancer and rectal cancer have so much in common that they are often grouped together. The difference between the two is where the tumor first forms.”

Colorectal cancer may not show any symptoms at first, but as the tumor grows, it can disrupt the body’s ability to digest food and remove waste products. Common symptoms include persistent diarrhea, constipation, rectal bleeding, stool stenosis, abdominal pain, and unexplained weight loss.

“Colorectal cancer is best treated when it is detected early. Screening prevents cancer by not only detecting it before it spreads, but also by detecting polyps before it becomes cancer. You can also do that, “Grimm said.

Not screened as recommended, millions of people are missing out on the opportunity to prevent colorectal cancer. The good news is that screening is easy and affordable. Most insurance plans help cover colorectal cancer screening for individuals over the age of 45. Screening tests may be covered by health insurance without deductions or out-of-pocket costs.

There are six types of colon cancer screening tests, and Penn Highland gastroenterologists recommend colon endoscopy for most patients. This is one of the most reliable screenings and is often cheaper than other tests.

Colon endoscopy usually takes 30-60 minutes. In this case, the doctor uses a colonoscope to look for signs of a tumor in the rectum and colon. During colonoscopy, the doctor can also remove most polyps.

“The American Cancer Society recently updated its screening recommendations. We now recommend that most people start screening at age 45, not at age 50,” Grimm said.

Doctors may recommend different screening schedules for individuals with high risk factors for colorectal cancer, such as type 2 diabetes, a history of radiation therapy for the abdomen, or a family history of colorectal cancer.

If you are diagnosed with colorectal or rectal cancer, you will be referred to an oncologist to explain the type of cancer, including stage and treatment. Oncologists create a personalized cancer treatment plan that includes surgery, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, or a combination of several.

“The most important thing is to discuss the risk of colorectal cancer with your healthcare provider and create a personalized screening schedule,” Grimm said. “The sooner you start, the more likely you are to prevent or detect colorectal cancer early.”

Penn Highlands Gastroenterology Services physicians are professionally trained to provide high quality, personalized care to people with gastrointestinal or gastrointestinal conditions. They diagnose and treat diseases of the colon and rectum, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, and liver. Colonoscopy can be done outpatiently at Penn Highland Healthcare Hospital or Dubois Endoscopy Center. For more information, please visit: www.phhealthcare.org/gi..
