With the exception of skin cancer, colorectal cancer is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in the United States. And in Pennsylvania, colorectal cancer mortality is higher than the national average. “Colorectal cancer occurs when abnormal growth forms in the colon or rectum,” said Taylor Grimm, a certified registered nurse in Penn Highland Gastroenterology. “Colorectal cancer and rectal cancer have so much in common that they are often grouped together. “Colorectal cancer is best treated when it is detected early. Screening prevents cancer by not only detecting it before it spreads, but also by detecting polyps before it becomes cancer. You can also do that, “Grimm said.
Not screened as recommended, millions of people are missing out on the opportunity to prevent colorectal cancer. The good news is that screening is easy and affordable. There are six types of colon cancer screening tests, and Penn Highland gastroenterologists recommend colon endoscopy for most patients. This is one of the most reliable screenings and is often cheaper than other tests.
Colon endoscopy usually takes 30-60 minutes. In this case, the doctor uses a colonoscope to look for signs of a tumor in the rectum and colon. During colonoscopy, the doctor can also remove most polyps.
“The American Cancer Society recently updated its screening recommendations. We now recommend that most people start screening at age 45, not at age 50,” Grimm said.
Doctors may recommend different screening schedules for individuals with high risk factors for colorectal cancer, such as type 2 diabetes, a history of radiation therapy for the abdomen, or a family history of colorectal cancer.

“The most important thing is to discuss the risk of colorectal cancer with your healthcare provider and create a personalized screening schedule,” Grimm said. “The sooner you start, the more likely you are to prevent or detect colorectal cancer early.”
