Baton Rouge, Louisiana (WAFB)-March is the National Kidney Month, and doctors are using the next few weeks to bring awareness of one of the country’s most deadly illnesses.
According to the National Kidney Foundation of Louisiana, Louisiana ranks first in per capita incidence of chronic kidney disease. According to recent reports, more than 460,000 people have been diagnosed, more than 16,000 have been on dialysis, and 1,800 are on the waiting list for life-saving transplants.
Chronic kidney disease is the eighth leading cause of death in the state.
Dr. Michael Roppolo, a nephrologist at the Renal Associates in Baton Rouge, said:
Dr. Roppolo said that chronic kidney disease causes more deaths each year than breast and prostate cancer.
Among the millions of people in countries suffering from this disease, experts say there are millions of people who have it but just don’t know.
Dr. Roppolo said it was because some symptoms could be overlooked.
“Until it’s too late, we don’t really have any symptoms,” said Dr. Roppolo.
Symptoms include diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, and family history.
According to experts, descendants of African-Americans, Hispanics, indigenous peoples, Asians, or Pacific Islanders are at increased risk of developing the disease. African Americans are three times more likely than Caucasians and Hispanics are nearly 1.5 times more likely to develop end-stage renal disease (renal failure) than non-Hispanics.
“Family history. If anyone has a family history, don’t ignore it,” said Dr. Roppolo.
To make it even more complicated, the transplant list is increasing, but the number of donors is decreasing.
Doctors are urging people to consider donating kidneys to family, friends, or anyone in need of your “reserve.” Living organ donors help others by giving them a second chance in life.
“The need for transplants, and the waiting list continues to grow,” said Dr. Roppolo. “We need more people to consider becoming an organ donor.”

The National Kidney Foundation’s (NKFL) 16th Baton Rouge Kidney Walk will begin on Saturday, April 2nd at the Highland Road Community Park and Grand Pavilion. It is expected that more than 300 pedestrians will participate in this event and raise awareness.
