Natural polyphenols appear to inhibit the activity of three important molecular pathways involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection-ScienceDaily

Using an interdisciplinary approach, the team found that tannins block the viral protein (RBD) of the British subspecies of SARS-CoV-2 from binding to its biological target, the ACE2 receptor. Shown. His team further investigated the effects of tannic acid on other major mechanisms involved in SARS-CoV-2 infection downstream of RBD-ACE2 binding. The team showed that this polyphenol can inhibit the activity of the enzyme that allows the virus to enter cells (TMPRSS2) and the viral enzyme that is involved in viral replication (3CLpro).
Antiviral alternatives
The effects of tannic acid on RBD proteins and these enzymes pave the way for further study of the entire virus in contact with human cells. If the beneficial properties are similar on a large scale, tannic acid tablets or nasal drops can be envisioned as a means of preventing or stopping SARS-CoV-2 infection.
Tannic acid is a natural polyphenol found in many beverages such as red wine and tea, but in much smaller amounts. They contain tannins, but their consumption has no protective effect due to the low concentration of tannic acid.
“It’s cheaper than the antivirals currently on the market, and because it’s less toxic to tannic acid and other polyphenols, it has fewer side effects. In addition, tannic acid and its physiological derivatives have anti-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory properties. This study is based on the team’s previous work on two other polyphenols (TGG and corilagin) and their interaction with the number of SARS-CoV-2 mutants. The two compounds had similar beneficial effects, but were less effective than tannic acid.
