Local women raise awareness of colorectal cancer
Jacksonville, Florida – Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in the United States and is expected to be the largest cancer murderer in adults under the age of 50 by the end of the decade.
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month and local women are part of a new national awareness campaign.
Kentisha Mazeke is one of 12 people whose stories are featured in the National Mall’s “Fight for More” campaign.
Starting Sunday, their photos will be displayed with a 27,000 blue flag representing a probable case of colorectal cancer in people under the age of 50, if nothing changes.
“She died on March 17, 2005, fighting colon cancer with revenge until she was 45,” said Kentisha Mazeke, Fight CRC Ambassador.
Mazeke’s mother, Felita Rollins, was diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer at the age of 43.
“I’m an only child. I was 22 when my mother died. More legislation needs to be put in place to recognize colorectal cancer as a truly life-threatening illness for many young adults and the elderly. “Mazeke said.

She works with survivors, patients, and caregivers to educate people about screening options, discuss with policy makers, allocate more research funding, and teach people the signs and symptoms to watch out for.
“They are fighting for research. They are fighting for treatment. They are fighting for more information and people who look like you and me,” Mazeke said.
It is a cancer that is preventable, treatable, and defeatable, but requires timely screening.
It is also the second most common cause of cancer death in the United States, with an increasing number of cases in young people.
