Fourth Influenza Death Confirmed by San Diego County as Remaining Low Rate – NBC7 San Diego
The San Diego County Health and Welfare Department confirmed a fourth death from influenza in the area on Wednesday. This is an 87 year old woman from South County.
According to health officials, the woman died on March 1, had an underlying illness, and had not been vaccinated against the flu. She didn’t have COVID-19 when she died.
“This flu season is relatively mild compared to many years so far, but the number of flu-related deaths has doubled from last season,” said county public health officer Wilma. Dr. Uten said. “It’s never too late to get a flu shot and protect yourself and your loved ones. The flu vaccine is safe and effective and is recommended for everyone over 6 months.”
According to HHSA, last week, emergency department visits for influenza-like illnesses were 2% of all visits, as they were last week.
Overall cases of influenza remain relatively low, with 53 new tests confirmed in the past week compared to 29 in the previous week.
By this season, the total number of cases confirmed in the lab was 1,657, 718 for the same period last season and 9,809 for the last five years of the same week.
Last season, 848 cases of influenza were reported in San Diego County, including two deaths. In 2019, a total of 108 San Diegans died of influenza and more than 20,700 cases of influenza were reported.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that all people over the age of 6 months be vaccinated against influenza each year.
