171,000 turkeys on six Indiana farms euthanized for bird flu-WISH-TV | Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather
Indianapolis (Wish) — Bird flu is still causing problems on Indiana turkey farms, forcing farmers to euthanize at least 171,000 birds.
Six farms in southern Indiana had recently had to weed out herds due to bird flu.
The farms are miles apart, so the mixture of birds did not spread the disease. Dennis Spears, spokeswoman for the Indiana State Animal Health Commission, said migratory birds and flooded farmland may have helped move influenza from farm to farm.

A typical Indiana turkey barn has thousands of birds under one roof. When the influenza virus is detected in a single bird, the entire herd can be infected. The current outbreak is not the first time Indiana poultry farmers have had to deal with bird flu. In 2016, 400,000 turkeys and chickens were lost on 11 Indiana farms.
Deborah Spears states that farmers have learned from the 2016 outbreak and made changes as a result.
