Accelerated aging tests include blood tests that analyze DNA and use algorithms to measure a person’s biological age. The phenomenon of a person’s biological age exceeding the chronological age is called “epigenetic age acceleration” and is associated with overall mortality and chronic illness.
“Accelerating age is not unique to OSA and can be caused by a variety of environmental factors such as smoking, poor diet and pollution,” said Dr. Rene Cortese, an assistant professor of pediatric health and obstetrics. increase. Cortese’s team investigated 16 adult nonsmokers diagnosed with OSA and evaluated the impact of OSA on one-year epigenetic age acceleration compared to eight unconditional control subjects. did. After a baseline blood test, the OSA group was retested after receiving continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment for one year.
“Our results found that OSA-induced sleep disorders and lower oxygen levels during sleep promoted faster acceleration of biological age compared to controls,” Cortese said. Told. “But OSA patients who adhered to CPAP showed an epigenetic slowdown in age, but the tendency to accelerate age did not change in the control group. Cortese said the key to CPAP’s success in slowing the acceleration of age is to adhere to strong adherence to using the device for at least 4 hours per night. It is not clear how accelerated age affects clinical outcomes and how it applies to other risk groups and children with OSA.
