MRNA vaccination found to be effective against SARS-CoV-2 virus mutants — precision vaccination
The British Medical Journal (BMJ) recently published the results of a prospective observational study of the clinical severity and efficacy of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccine against Omicron, Delta, and Alpha SARS-CoV-2 virus variants in the United States.
This external peer review, published March 9, 2022 study “The mRNA vaccine has been found to be very effective in preventing adult covid-19-related hospitalizations associated with the mutant,” he concluded.
The efficacy of double doses of the mRNA vaccine to prevent hospitalization with covid-19 was lower with the Omicron variant than with the alpha and delta variants (65%, 85%, and 85%, respectively).
‘On the other hand, three doses of vaccine were found to achieve efficacy against the Omicron variant (86%), as well as two doses against the alpha and delta variants.
“In adults hospitalized for covid-19, the Omicron variant was associated with less severe disease than the Delta variant, but still resulted in significant morbidity and mortality.”
‘Approximately 15% of Omicron mutant patients in this study progressed to invasive ventilator and 7% died.
In addition, “patients admitted to the hospital with covid-19 were significantly less severe than unvaccinated patients for all variants.”
This study was funded by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. These researchers did not reveal a conflict of interest in the industry.
