Wichita, Kansas (KWCH)-A new threat to bird populations has arrived in Kansas. This month, the Kansas Department of Agriculture reported the first case of bird flu since 2015.A new case was found southwest of Kansas City Metro In a flock of poultry in the backyard.
The agency is taking precautions.

The timing is disappointing, but prevention is appropriate, Heitman said.
“It’s spring break now, so I’m angry that guests can’t see the birds, but that’s their number one concern,” she said.
Very few bird exhibits at Sedgwick County Zoo are open to the public.
“Our penguins, and our bald eagles, have arrived in North America,” Heitman said. “It’s because of the way the exhibits are. Birds are still protected.”
The Kansas Department of Agriculture said it is important for poultry farmers and backyard chickens and other poultry owners to take similar biosecurity measures.
These steps are as follows:
- Prevents contact with wild birds, especially wild waterfowl. Eliminate all potential nesting sites for wild birds.
- It covers and surrounds the outdoor feeding area and covers the stored feed.
- Take all possible steps to isolate wild birds from access to your flock and their living area.
- Cleaning and disinfection of vehicle tires and equipment on other farms and other locations with poultry and wild birds.
- Wear clean clothing, boots, and shoes when coming into contact with the herd.
- Limit unauthorized people and vehicles.
- Isolate new birds.
“Minimize visitors. Don’t take birds off the premises and return them to the facility,” said Dr. Justin Smith, Director of Agricultural and Animal Health, Kansas. “If you buy new birds, make sure they come from a certified clean supplier, or at least make sure you quarantine them.”
In the United States, bird flu was detected on the east coast earlier this year and is heading west. The Ministry of Agriculture said it exists like any other respiratory virus.
“They need to know what those symptoms look like in their birds and monitor them daily or more routinely,” Dr. Smith said.
Regarding the Sedgwick County Zoo, Heitman said he is closely monitoring the spread of the virus throughout Kansas and is working with partners.
“The prevalence begins to decline, and then we can see it alleviate some of our protocols,” she said.
Animal welfare staff at Sedgwick County Zoo wear personal protective equipment when caring for birds, limiting the chances of tracking the virus. The Ministry of Agriculture recommends wearing clean clothes and shoes when caring for the herd. Those who have sick poultry are asked to report to the Kansas Department of Agriculture.
The last serious outbreaks of bird flu in the Midwest occurred in 2014 and 2015. The K-State Center, which studies animal diseases, said it caused the deaths of about 50 million birds. It caused a rise in chicken and turkey meat prices, as well as egg prices.
