Colombia-Spring is approaching, and some people in central Missouri are already experiencing seasonal changes in allergies.
“Oh, this year has been terrible so far,” said Scott Schwartz, who suffers from seasonal allergies. “If I have allergies, there is no way I can be here.”
Dr. Margaret Day of MU Healthcare said she believes we are seeing the typical beginning of spring.
“Especially in Missouri, we see a significant amount of allergic patients,” Dr. Day said.
Dr. Day is a family doctor and one of the co-chairs of the COVID-19 Vaccine Commission. She said that symptoms of allergies and viral respiratory illnesses can mimic the symptoms of coronavirus.
“We’re definitely still thinking about COVID-19 and the flu,” Dr. Day said. “There is considerable overlap between them, which can be difficult to diagnose.”
She said that some symptoms that keep an eye on include runny nose, congestion, coughing, shortness of breath, and sometimes fever.

Schwartz said he would be happy to deal with these seasonal symptoms if it meant that spring weather would continue.
“If it’s sunny and warm, take seasonal allergies,” Schwartz said. “It’s definitely a mood booster.”
Dr. Day said wearing a mask during a pandemic may have protected people from allergic symptoms over the past few years. But most people in central Missouri no longer wear masks, so this year’s allergic symptoms may look a little different, she said.
“That’s what we’re paying attention to-you know-what kind of infection is happening in our community,” Dr. Day said. “And since we’ve been unmasking lately, how allergies may even appear a little different.”
She said MU Healthcare saw fewer cases of COVID-19 infection in the community, but it is not yet a completely zero infection rate.
“Even if there are new symptoms that may indicate COVID-19, we recommend testing them,” said Dr. Day.
