EYEWITNESS NEWS (WBRE / WYOU) — March is National Kidney Awareness Month to pay attention to the illnesses affecting more than 37 million American adults.
One in three Americans is at risk of developing chronic kidney disease. The kidney is a super-organ that filters waste products, toxins, and water from the body.
The woman who survived chronic kidney disease shared her health experience with me and told me why she became an advocate for others.
“It started when I was 23. I didn’t know I had kidney disease,” said Maria Jimenez, an advocate of kidney care.
However, due to unexplained symptoms 13 years ago, Maria Jimenez realized something was wrong.
“Shortness of breath, headache, fatigue. So I knew something was wrong. I didn’t know what it was. I finally went to the ER and they confirmed my diagnosis I did, “Jimenez explained.
She had late-stage chronic kidney disease or CKD. This is a condition in which 90% of people are unaware that their kidneys may be damaged. Diabetes and high blood pressure, the two main causes of CKD, can damage the kidneys if left uncontrolled. So is the family history of kidney disease. Early screening is very important in these situations.
“You need to have a CKD test at least every year. This means it’s very simple. That means you ask your health care provider, they usually do blood and urine tests. It will help them understand your kidney health, “said Kathleen Belmonte, Chief Nursing Officer for Frezenius Medical Care in North America.
For millions of people with advanced CKD, dialysis is a way of life. For Jimenez, the dialysis occurred in the clinic for five years. Making those promises forced her to quit her job and drop out of her school. But when she moved to her home hemodialysis, everything changed, she says.
“I feel better, I have more energy, my overall health has improved, and I have better control over my schedule,” says Jimenez.
Four years later, she received a kidney transplant in 2017.
“After receiving the transplant, I was very successful and no longer needed to undergo dialysis,” Jimenez said.
Jimenez is one of the lucky ones. She and Belmonte are working to defend other people at risk.
“At Fresenius, we spend a lot of time identifying CKD, but it’s important to discuss how to control progression so that we don’t have end-stage renal disease,” Belmonte explained.
Jimenez, now 36, lives in Sacramento, California, helping to advocate and educate CKD patients.
