Bird flu euthanized birds in the animal sanctuary

Dozens of birds in New Hampshire’s animal sanctuary were euthanized after an outbreak of a highly pathogenic avian influenza strain.
WMUR-TV State officials reportedly were the first confirmed diagnosis of a strain of poultry in New Hampshire. Pumpkin wall farm animal sanctuary In Delhi they said they were devastated. State workers were in the game reserve on Friday and euthanized what their owners estimated to be about 80 of their birds.
Since January, there have been outbreaks in other New England states and across the country, but mainly in backyard farms and chicken businesses. The first case in Maine was identified in a backyard herd in February, and the second case was found in another backyard herd a few days later.
The virus is often spread to poultry by infected wild birds.
This week, the Rhode Island House of Representatives passed a bill allowing the state to set up a quarantine area to prevent the movement of livestock and products in the event of suspected infectious animal disease such as bird flu.
State environmental authorities have requested changes to address the current outbreak of bird flu. They said the strain does not affect humans, but is deadly to birds and can wipe out the entire herd.
Five turkeys died suddenly this week at Pumpkin Wall Farm. Owner Brendena Fleming said a sick wild duck landed in a pond and infected the herd. She said she had contacted a state veterinarian who had determined she had bird flu.
After that, the rest of the chickens, ducks, geese and turkeys had to be euthanized.
