With the emergence of rare and potentially deadly viruses in common mites in North Carolina and the southeast, researchers are better understanding before they cause “bigger problems” for people.
According to a peer-reviewed study by scientists at Emory University in Atlanta, the heartland virus was tracked to ticks most often associated with human bites.
“We are trying to stay ahead of the virus by learning as much as we can about it,” Gonzalo Basquez Prokopek, lead author of the study, said in a news release.
Studies show that the Heartland virus was first discovered among humans in 2009.
Since its discovery in Missouri, 50 in the Southeast and Midwest, including Arkansas, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Tennessee, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention. More than one human case has been reported.
The disease also spread to white-tailed deer in the southeast.

The study said that human cases of heartland virus were “mainly severe or fatal.”
People infected with the heartland virus can experience fever, malaise, nausea, and joint pain. An even more annoying symptom is that it can interfere with the body’s ability to make blood clots.
The CDC recommends seeing a doctor if symptoms occur.
According to the CDC, there are no vaccines or drugs to prevent infection, but new research shows that certain wildlife may have natural antibodies to fight the virus.
In this study, researchers surveyed 26 high-population sites in rural Georgia in 2018 and collected 2,960 species of mites, including ticks. The team used a method called “flagging”. In this method, researchers passed a white flag through a brush to collect mites.
“The ticks are so small that you may not even notice them if you are bitten by them,” co-author of the study, Steph Bellman, said in a news release.
After two of the 26 sites tested positive for the virus, researchers surveyed those two sites in 2019 and collected an additional 6,470 mites.
The study found that ticks had the highest virus infection rates in two locations.
Although the overall prevalence of this disease is low among mites, experts fear that the widespread range of ticks across the United States may intensify the virus.
According to this study, there is a “big knowledge gap” in understanding the tick’s heartland virus. Although the reported cases of viral infection in humans are low, researchers believe that a lack of understanding of the virus can lead to underreporting of cases.
