(WKBN) — March is National Kidney Month — a time to raise awareness about warning signs and treatment options for chronic kidney disease.
The kidneys play a major role in filtering waste products, toxins, and water from the body.
According to the National Kidney Foundation, it is estimated that more than 37 million adults in the United States have chronic kidney disease, but about 90% are unaware that their kidneys may be damaged.
There are five stages of kidney disease, and most people are asymptomatic in stages 1-3, so it is important to understand the risk factors and schedule regular screening.
“Diabetes and hypertension account for about 75% of new diagnoses of CKD because they are the two main causes of chronic kidney disease,” said Kathleen Belmonte of Fresenius Medical Care North America.
According to Belmonte, symptoms of advanced kidney disease of stage 4 and 5 and above can include swelling of the legs and hands, headaches, and high blood pressure.
She said she should check for chronic kidney disease every year, especially if she has diabetes or high blood pressure.
