What is Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever as a woman diagnosed with this disease in the United Kingdom?
A British woman is being treated for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever after traveling to Central Asia.
This is a viral hemorrhagic fever normally transmitted by mites, but it can also be caused by contact of the virus with viremia animal tissue that has entered the bloodstream.
She was diagnosed at Cambridge University Hospital and has specialized medical care at Royal London Free Hospital.
This diagnosis is the third known case of fever in the United Kingdom, and previous cases were reported in 2012 and 2014, but neither spread.
Dr. Susan Hopkins, Chief Medical Advisor at UKHSA, said people who were in close contact with women were contacted, evaluated and advised.
Human-to-human transmission can result from close contact with the infected person’s blood, secretions, organs, and other body fluids, but Dr. Hopkins said the virus does not spread easily among humans. He added that the overall risk to the public is very low.
What is Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever?
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever was first reported in Crimean in 1944 and was subsequently found to share the disease and pathogen identified in Congo in 1956.
Symptoms often appear suddenly, including fever, muscle aches, dizziness, neck pain, back pain, headaches, eye sores, and hypersensitivity to light.
People also suffer from nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and sore throat early on, after which mood swings and confusion may increase.
Other signs include a rash in the mouth and throat, an increased heart rate, and swollen lymph nodes.

How serious is it?
According to the WHO, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever has a mortality rate of about 30% and usually dies in the second week of infection.
People who recover generally improve on the 9th or 10th day after the onset of illness.
There is no vaccine available for humans or animals, but it can be treated with the antiviral drug ribavirin instead.
What do experts say?
UKHSA advised that anyone visiting the area where the ticks were found should be protected.
This includes avoiding tick-rich areas when ticks are active, using tick repellents, and carefully checking clothes and skin for ticks.
Dr. Hopkin said: “UKHSA and NHS have strong established infection control procedures for dealing with cases of imported infectious diseases, which are strictly adhered to.”
How many cases do you have?
Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever is prevalent in Africa, the Balkans, the Middle East, and Asia in countries south of the 50th parallel.
In countries such as Iran, Turkey, Uzbekistan and parts of Russia, more than 50 cases are reported annually.
Hyalomma mites, the major carriers of the disease, have not been established in the United Kingdom, and no virus has been detected in mites found in the United Kingdom.
