Colon cancer is a treatable disease if detected early.
The recommendation was 50 before. Deborah Yarber missed her screening at 50 because she didn’t have insurance to cover it. But when she was 60, she felt sick and she knew something was wrong.

“Sudden severe abdominal pain,” she said. “On colon endoscopy, they told me I had colon cancer, and it was almost a complete obstruction.”
She met Dr. Sean Webb at Henry Ford Hospital. Two weeks later she had surgery and her cancer was gone.
“She sought medical care early on, so she got good results,” Webb said.
Coroguard and stool tests can also help detect problems. Webb said there are signs of colon cancer to watch out for.
“Changes in bowel habits, obstruction, bleeding, pain-these are usually signs of more advanced cancer,” he said.
After diagnosis, a treatment plan is created.

“The advantage of a collaborative tumor board is that all heads are pathologists, oncologists, and radiologists together,” Webb said.
Yarber wants her story to encourage others to have a colonoscopy.
“I feel as healthy as before,” she said. “It was very easy. I see it like detox.”
