Trials May Help Increase Supply of Japanese Encephalitis Vaccine-UQ News
A potential new approach to administering the existing Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine could make it more affordable and increase the dose in Australia.
Researchers at the University of Queensland and the QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, along with Dr Deb The Travel Doctor, are investigating the efficacy of small intradermal doses of the JE vaccine.
UQ Dr. Luis Fruya Kanamori The study was still in the preparatory stage, but the initial results were promising.
“Participants received micro doses of the existing vaccine on the top layer of the skin, not the deeper layers of the skin,” said Dr. Kanamori Furuya.
“After eight weeks, all the first 11 participants showed good antibody levels without serious adverse events,” said Dr. Kanamori Furuya.
“This potential approach means reducing the cost of JE vaccination and protecting four times as many people per vaccination vial.”
Japanese encephalitis is a deadly arbovirus that can be transmitted by mosquitoes and causes high levels of human illness in many countries, including China, India, the Philippines and Vietnam.
“We first started this study looking for ways to increase vaccination rates for Australians traveling to countries and regions infected with the virus,” said Dr. Kanamori Furuya.
“There are effective JE vaccines that are widely used in Australia, but the problem is that many people aren’t vaccinated because it costs about $ 300 for travelers.
“Vaccine doses are currently limited in Australia as well.”
The clinical study is timely with JE cases detected in four Australian states in recent months, leading to the declaration of nationally important infectious disease cases.
Associate Professor Greg Devine of QIMRBerghofer said that due to a sudden outbreak, Vaccine inventories increase as demand increases.
“As the test progresses, we will determine if Microdose consistently produces the required antibody levels across a much larger group of people,” said Dr. Devine.
“Our preliminary results reflect similar findings about low-dose intradermal administration of other vaccines, including the yellow fever and rabies vaccines.”
The study is being conducted in collaboration with Dr Deb The Travel Doctor in Brisbane, where participants will provide blood samples before vaccination and two more samples after 4 and 8 weeks.
Collaborators include Dr Deborah Mills and Christine Mills of Dr Deb The Travel Doctor, Dr Narayan Gyawali of QIMR Berghofer, and Professor Colleen Lau From UQ’s Faculty of Public Health.
