State officials found the first case of bird flu OK
Payne County — The Oklahoma Agricultural Department confirmed on Thursday that it had found the first wild bird infected with Eurasian H5 highly pathogenic avian influenza.
The first case was found in a wild duck in Payne County.
“Oklahoma has never seen HPAI in the backyard or flock of commercial poultry this year, but the discovery of this single duck adds Oklahoma to a long list of states where HPAI cases have been identified,” said Oklahoma. Dr. Rodhall, a state veterinarian, said. “I encourage owners of all types of poultry to remain vigilant, practice good biosecurity, and immediately report sick and dying birds.”
The symptoms of HPAI in poultry are:
- Reduced water consumption
- Lack of energy and appetite
- Decrease in egg production or softening
- Malformed egg
- Runny nose due to coughing or sneezing
- Dissonance
- diarrhea
HPAI can also cause sudden death of a bird, even if the bird does not show any other symptoms. HPAI can survive for weeks in a polluted environment.
According to the Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, this type of HPAI virus is considered low risk to people, but it is very dangerous to poultry species, which is an important part of Oklahoma’s agricultural industry.
“We urge everyone involved in poultry and egg production, from large farms to backyard herds, to review and implement biosecurity practices to ensure the health and well-being of their herds.” Said Dr. Hall.
Although there are no known cases of HPAI in Oklahoma poultry, the disease continues to infect herds of livestock throughout the northern and eastern United States.
Since January 2022, there have been 77 confirmed cases of HPAI in US domestic herds.
If you find a sick wild bird, report it to USDA Wildlife Services (405-521-4039). Poultry mortality or illness should be reported to the ODAFF Animal Industry Division (405-522-6141).
