Cases of norovirus are on the rise in Ireland, and health experts say the bugs are now spreading like wildfires.
As Covid’s restrictions were relaxed and people resumed close contact in crowded areas, health officials increased the number of norovirus cases by a factor of 10.
17 new gastric infections were detected during the week leading up to March 26, and 137 new cases were detected in 2022.
This is a significant increase from last year, when only 14 cases have been reported so far.

However, when Ireland was in Covid’s blockade and the school was closed, hygiene improved and there was no out-of-home interaction, resulting in far fewer cases.
The six main symptoms to watch out for are:
- vomiting
- diarrhea
- I feel sick
- Aching arms and legs
- high temperature
- headache
How to reduce the spread of norovirus
According to HSE, norovirus spreads very easily in public places such as hospitals, elderly housing with care, and schools.
You can catch it:
- Close contact with people infected with norovirus.They may spit out small particles containing the virus you can inhale
- Touch contaminated surfaces and objects.The virus can survive for several days outside the body
- Eat contaminated food.This can happen if the infected person does not wash their hands before handling the food.
It is most susceptible to infection 48 hours after the onset of symptoms. “Also, it can be infected for a short time before and after this,” says HSE.
Norovirus is constantly changing and can be infected multiple times. Therefore, the body cannot increase its long-term resistance to norovirus.
The following advice will help prevent the spread of the virus.
- Take a break from work or school for at least 48 hours after your symptoms have subsided.You also need to avoid visiting people in the hospital during this period.
- Wash your hands frequently and thoroughly with soap and water.Do not rely on alcohol hand gels as they do not kill the virus
- Disinfect surfaces or objects that may be contaminated.It’s best to use a bleach-based household cleaner
- Wash all clothing and bedding that may have been separately contaminated with a hot wash to ensure that the virus is killed.
- Do not share towels and flannel
- Avoid eating raw, unwashed produce
