Breast Cancer: Researchers Identify Protein Biomarkers
In a small study, researchers used breast milk to identify protein biomarkers for breast cancer. This is a discovery they believe is the first step in developing a simple blood test to screen patients faster and easier.
Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology during this week’s Conference of Experimental Biology 2022, this study compared the milk of three women with breast cancer with the milk of three without breast cancer.
They found that there were 23 different proteins between the two sets of samples, all of which were previously associated with the development of cancer or tumors.
By isolating and searching for biomarkers, researchers say they can approach the development of blood tests that can be easily used to screen for breast cancer.
“Mammograms are a useful tool for early detection of breast cancer, but they are usually not recommended for low-risk women under the age of 40,” said Clarkson University’s PhD candidate in New York, leading the study. To separate the proteins, researchers used a process called tandem mass spectrometry to break down the ions in breast milk into fragments. This allows scientists to see the chemical structures that make up a substance.
Women with breast cancer had 23 dysregulated proteins. This means that there have been unexpected changes in the way these proteins are synthesized, resulting in changes in cell structure. Previous studies have shown that dysregulated proteins are a sign of a variety of conditions, including cancer.
“We used breast milk because it contains proteins, epithelial cells, and immune cells, all of which provide a lot of information about what is happening in the woman’s body during important periods of breast development. We will provide it, “says Hoisam.
The set of biomarkers identified by the researchers applies only to one type of breast cancer, one of the most common types, invasive breast cancer (IDC).
