Hamsters recovered from SARS-CoV-2 had a gene expression signature similar to that found in the dorsal root ganglion of mice affected by pain caused by inflammation and nerve damage.
Researchers also predicted that SARS-CoV-2 downregulates the activity of several previously identified pain regulators and a protein called interleukin enhancer binding factor 3 (ILF3).
This downregulation occurs when the painful behavior of SARS-CoV-2 infected hamsters is very mild despite severe systemic inflammation.
