Pitt County, NC (WITN)-The state is imposing a new outage on the poultry industry due to the rise in high-pass bird flu infections.
On Tuesday, North Carolina veterinarian Dr. Michael Martin suspended all poultry shows and mass public sales.
More than 350,000 birds have been euthanized in the state this week, but the total number of affected birds is still unknown, and the state is expanding its testing parameters for each new positive site.
Martin is strengthening the rule of bird herds in an attempt to defeat the clock of out-of-state infected wild bird migration patterns and minimize mutual pollution.
Feed store owners are wondering what this means for their industry.
“If commercial sales are banned, it will have a significant impact on us,” said Greg Cannom, owner of the farm building hardware and feed store.
Canon sold the last chick in his recent order, but the high-pass bird flu was circulating all over the country, so I was wondering if it would be safe to order more.
“We were certainly worried about it, but we sold some chicks this year,” Cannon said. “We usually sell about 600 chicks a year from our stores.”
