FDOH responds to the outbreak of meningococcal disease
The Florida Department of Health has described how to respond to the outbreak of meningococcal disease in the state.
In a press release, DOH stated that the number of cases so far in 2022 exceeded the five-year average of state meningococcal disease. According to DOH, epidemiologists are not only investigating each case, but also contacting people with potential or direct exposure to discuss treatment options.
DOH said that meningococcal disease is serious and is caused by a bacterium called meningococcus. DOH These bacteria are not as contagious as the bacteria that cause the common cold and flu. People do not catch bacteria by accidental contact or air breathing where there was a person with meningococcal disease. It requires close contact for a period of time, or direct contact such as kissing or sharing a drink.
Early symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, stiff shoulders, nausea, vomiting, photosensitivity, confusion, and a rash. Those who have been exposed or have developed symptoms should be evaluated immediately by their healthcare provider. This is a rare but potentially catastrophic illness.
The DOH said the following groups should consider vaccination with the Meningococcal Meningococcal (MenACWY) vaccine at the time of this outbreak.
- College students and college students
- People with immunodeficiency
- People living with HIV
- Men having sex with men
- People in the above group who were vaccinated with the MenACWY vaccine over 5 years ago
