Egg prices soar due to bird flu

Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin (WEAU)-Easter is imminent. If you’re thinking of decorating eggs, you can expect to pay more than usual.

Agricultural agents in Chippewa County, with UW-Madison’s extended Jerry Clark, say there are several reasons for the price surge.

Clark says bird flu usually comes from wild birds.

“Avian influenza tends to spread either in wild ducks and geese populations, or in moving wild birds,” Clark said.

He says the supply cannot keep up with the demand for eggs.

“If a positive bird test is done in a commercial barn or backyard herd, it is recommended to reduce the barn population,” Clark said.

Clark says there was another outbreak of bird flu in 2015, but the price wasn’t that high.

“I think prices are currently up about 50%. In some states it’s not doubling, but in Wisconsin it’s up in the range of 50% to 75%,” Clark said. I am saying.

Clark also says that bird flu is not only affecting eggs, but also the poultry meat industry.

“I have the same problem I saw a few months ago and there isn’t much chicken on the shelves to consume the meat,” Clark said. “This will be directly related to bird flu. There are also a few supply chain type issues.”

Clark says it will take some time for the prices of these eggs and poultry to fall, especially if bird flu is widespread.

“It will take months to get the barn back to full production,” Clark said.

Clark says egg prices can drop somewhat after Easter.

Overall, he says prices can remain high throughout the summer. When the warm climate begins, Clark says the bird flu has subsided and can give the herd time to reduce its numbers.
