Survey on the increase in hepatitis cases in children in the United Kingdom
Nurses are being asked to be vigilant for children with symptoms of acute hepatitis in a large number of cases throughout the UK where the cause is still unknown.
Public health authorities in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are investigating 74 cases of hepatitis (liver inflammation) that have occurred since January 2022 at a “higher than normal” rate.

In all cases, the usual viruses that cause hepatitis A, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, hepatitis D, and hepatitis E have not been detected.
A potential cause under investigation is a group of viruses called adenoviruses, but experts have not ruled out other causes, including Covid-19.
However, they said the vaccine was not related to the Covid-19 vaccine because not all identified pediatric patients were vaccinated.
The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is working with NHS, Public Health Wales, Public Health Scotland, and the Public Health Agency in Northern Ireland to investigate cases.
They also aim to raise awareness among health care professionals so that they can identify potentially affected children early and perform appropriate tests.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to pay attention to the signs of hepatitis in their children and contact a medical professional if they are worried.

Of the 74 confirmed cases, 49 are in England, 13 in Scotland, and the rest in Wales and Northern Ireland.
