Increasing number of active COVID cases in the Sudbury region, but no new deaths

Public Health Sudbury and Districts reported 167 new cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday.

Most cases (149) occurred in Greater Sudbury, 8 in the Sudbury area, and the rest in Manitoulin Island.
However, the health department warns that new cases are likely to be underestimated due to limited testing.
Public health also does not report new deaths from the virus. So far, since March 2020, 131 people in the Sudbury region have died directly or indirectly from COVID-19. Of these deaths, a total of 118 people occurred in the Sudbury metropolitan area, and the others were divided into the Sudbury district and Manitoulin Island.
Since the pandemic began more than two years ago, the health department has detected a total of 13,892 cases. In most cases – 11,746 – were recorded in Sudbury.
On the downside, the number of active cases has increased. There were 476 active cases on Wednesday in the Sudbury region, compared to 412 on Monday when public health last reported on COVID-19.
However, the number of patients in hospitals in the Sudbury area with COVID was flat. Wednesday was 31st, the same as Monday. About 18 of those patients were hospitalized for COVID-19. Others are infected with the virus, but have been hospitalized for other reasons.
Also, the number of 9 outbreaks on the same Wednesday as Monday remains unchanged. Outbreaks are divided into retirement homes, apartments, and long-term care facilities.
Public health and its partners have been vaccinated more than 438,906 times. As a result, 81.6 people living in the Sudbury-Manitulin area were considered fully vaccinated, meaning that they had been vaccinated at least twice. But only one-third, or booster shots, were received by 55.9 percent.

Meanwhile, in Ontario, 1,332 people were reported on Wednesday with COVID-19 and 182 in the intensive care unit.
This is compared to 1,366 hospitalizations on Tuesday and 190 hospitalizations in the ICU.
The state recorded another 12 deaths from the virus on Wednesday.
An additional 3,833 new infections have been reported, but access to PCR tests is restricted.
The chief scientist of the panel of COVID-19 advisors in Ontario said wastewater surveillance suggests that the state sees 100,000 to 120,000 new cases daily.
Approximately 18% of Ontario care facilities currently report active COVID-19 outbreaks.
