The State Agricultural Department has ordered a temporary ban on poultry and egg exhibitions at local trade fairs.
Due to the recent nationwide outbreak of bird flu, the PA Ministry of Agriculture has temporarily banned the presence and display of poultry and eggs at county and local trade fairs in Pennsylvania.
The ban will take effect on April 16th and will last for 60 days or until the department cancels the order. This ban applies to 108 county and local fairs funded by the state under the Pennsylvania Agricultural Fair Act.
As of April 12, cases of birds infected in commercial and backyard poultry herds were identified in 26 states, including the surrounding Pennsylvania. Genetic analysis of samples taken in other US states shows that the virus is spread by infected wild birds.
Highly pathogenic avian influenza is highly contagious and is often fatal to birds.
“The Pennsylvania Agricultural Trade Fair is an important educational event for our youth,” Ag’s Secretary of State Russell Reading said Thursday. “But if bird flu is an imminent threat, the risks to poultry farmers and the economy outweigh the benefits of exhibiting poultry at trade fairs.”
In Pennsylvania, no cases of bird flu (also known as bird flu) have been identified in commercial or backyard poultry since the outbreak between 1983 and 1984.
According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, recent detections of avian influenza do not immediately indicate public health concerns, and no human cases of avian influenza virus have been detected in the United States.
Poultry and eggs can be safely consumed if stored and cooked at the appropriate temperature.
