“Bubble Tea Girl”: A Coma Teen After Poisoning A Sweet Drink

A teenage girl who was crazy about bubble tea had been in a coma for five days because she couldn’t control her sugar intake by drinking two glasses a day for a month.

An 18-year-old doctor was given the nickname “Bubble Tea Girl” after revealing that he had about 25 times higher than normal blood sugar levels.

A teenager from Shanghai, eastern China, fell into a coma and weighed 125 kg when taken to Zuijin Hospital on May 2.

According to her mother, she was obsessed with sweet drinks such as bubble tea (also known as bobati) and cola, spending over 100 yuan (AUD 20) daily for a month.

Lu Yiming, a paramedic, said the girl had a diabetic coma caused by hyperglycemia or dangerously high levels of blood sugar.

A week before she was found unconscious by her family, Bubble Tea had also experienced symptoms such as thirst, nausea, and frequent urination.

All of these are signs of a related complication known as diabetic ketoacidosis or DKA.

The girl underwent mechanical ventilation and hemodialysis, and finally woke up from coma after 5 days.

On June 1, her condition was deemed stable and was transferred to Nanxiang Hospital for follow-up care.

By the time he left the Ruikin Hospital, he had lost 35kg.

The teenager promised never to drink bubble tea again.
