A deer killed on a road found in Lewisburg and another deer found on a farm in Lycoming County turned out to be chronic wasting disease, and the Pennsylvania Games Commission said it was one of the existing Deer Management Areas (DMA). Expanded one and added another deer to this area.
The Game Rating and Administration has created a seventh DMA and extended two existing DMAs in response to the recent discovery of CWD-positive deer in a new region of the state.
The new DMA7 is a reaction to CWD-positive deer in Lycoming County breeding facilities. The new 460 square miles DMA includes parts of Lycoming, Northumberland, Montur, Colombia and Sullivan counties.
Chronic wasting disease is a deadly neurological condition that affects certain species such as deer, elk, caribou, and mousse.
According to the Game Rating and Administration Committee, symptoms of animals suffering from chronic wasting disease can include rapid weight loss, tripping, and other neurological problems. According to the Game Rating and Administration Committee, CWD was first discovered in 2012 in Pennsylvania. Deer can spread the disease through contact between animals.
Although CWD has not been recorded in humans, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention does not recommend eating CWD-positive venison.
According to the committee, DMA 7 is the fifth DMA created for CWD-positive deer on deer farms.
DMA 2 includes Adams, Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Center, Clearfield, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Fulton, Huntingdon, Indiana, Juniata, Mifflin, Northumberland, Perry, Snyder, Somerset, Union, Includes parts of each county in Westmoreland. CWD has been detected in wild and captive deer and has been extended in two locations.
At the northeastern corner of the DMA, an adult female deer killed on the road was found at the current boundary and expanded north toward Lewisberg along the western tributary of the Susquehanna River.
The north-central boundary of DMA 2 is altered by the detection of CWD in deer farms and adult stags killed on the road. The DMA 2 boundary extends north to Interstate 99 / Route 322 and includes the Los Rock State Forest and State College areas.
The Game Rating and Administration monitors deer killed on the road all year round, so boundaries may change before the hunting season.
Within all DMA and CWD establishment areas, the following is illegal:
- Remove or export high-risk parts of deer and elk (head, spine, spleen, etc.) from inside the DMA or EA.
- Use or have a deer or elk urine-based attractant.
- Feed wild free-range deer directly or indirectly. It is already illegal to feed elks regardless of the location of the DMA
- Rehab wild free-range deer and elks.
