“It must be done under the automatic transfer of a qualified doctor or county health department,” Jackson said. “So, not only will we provide pharmacists who may be interested in doing this, or may be interested in getting trained, but we will also link them to local providers.”
According to 2019 data from the Illinois Public Health Department, 9,072 black men are diagnosed with HIV and live, accounting for one-quarter of all HIV-positive people in Illinois. Meanwhile, according to the same report, 4,538 black women live with HIV, accounting for about 13% of Illinois people diagnosed with HIV.
Many hope that this proposal will help Illinois reduce the number of new cases of HIV to zero by 2030. Jackson emphasized that HIV can affect all gender, age, and racial groups.
“We talk about PrEP in a very abstract way, but in many cases PrEP is primarily aimed at the LGBTQ community, but that’s very wrong,” Jackson said. “PrEP is for those who are currently having sex. Limited.”
