The longest Covid infection lasted 505 days, tests show
London — UK doctors believe they recorded the longest Covid infection on record — patients they treated had a total detectable level of virus for 16 months, or 505 days or more.
An unnamed individual had other underlying medical conditions and sadly died in a hospital in 2021.
Such persistent infections are still rare, according to London medical personnel.
Most people naturally clear the virus, but the patient in question had a severely weakened immune system.
According to experts, such chronic infections need to be studied to better understand Covid and the risks it may pose.
The patient was first infected with Covid in early 2020. They had symptoms and the infection was confirmed by PCR.
They went to and from the hospital many times over the next 72 weeks for both regular checks and care.
Every time (about 50 in total) they are positive, which means they still had Covid.
Doctors at King’s College London and Guys and St. Thomas NHS Foundation Trust said detailed examination analysis revealed that the seizures were the same persistent infection rather than repeated.
Even after receiving the antiviral drug, the patient was unable to shake the infection.
This is different from “long Covid”, where the virus is removed from the body but the symptoms persist.
Dr. Luke Bragdon Snell is one of the medical professionals presenting the findings at the Medical Conference, the European Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases Conference.
He told the BBC: -The patient was unique and constant. “
Prolonged infections are rare, but important. Because the infection can cause new variants of Covid. However, this did not happen.
Dr. Snell said: “If people are infected for a long time, the virus is still adapted to the human host, which may provide Covid with the opportunity to generate new mutations.
“Some of these patients we studied have the mutations found in some of the variants of concern.”
He emphasized that none of the nine patients they checked produced new dangerous variants.
